Art, in all of its glory, is hereby present in fashion. Fashion has taken over the world. Everywhere we look, it’s all designer stores, filled with clothes, shoes, bags, shawls, wallets, and sunglasses, down to little jewelry accessories. My favorite quote about fashion, which I absolutely agree with, is Blair Waldorf’s from Gossip Girl that “Fashion is the most powerful art there is. It’s movement, design and architecture all in one. It shows the world who we are and who we’d like to be.” And that is exactly what the world has become. From the outfits that we wear, to the layout of our houses and offices, it is a depiction of how people want to be perceived. Fashion is no longer just a transparent ensemble. It has become one of the largest industries in the world. Since Ancient Roman times, the hierarchy have always indulged in the most fashionable outfits. Monarchs would be competing against who’s country has the most beautiful palaces and family the most stunning garments and jewelry. Now, it has become the same for houses; the fashion industry has created a competition of who can build the most beautiful houses and also which families from the hierarchy have the most to show off. Now, fashion literally runs the world, for all the social classes. Whether it is in designing an office, the model of it is arranged in the most fashionable and in style manner. The color scheme, the theme, the pattern, the method, it is all done in a stylish sense in order to show the world who you are by demonstrating your work place in a sophisticated manner. Fashion is art, in the most distinctive manner. It is all about the architecture of a house, the design of an outfit, the trendy interior designing.
Fashion has taken over the decor of malls, houses, offices, and cities itself. It has also surrounded us in forms of hundreds of thousands of magazines and pictures. It has reached out towards our hairstyles, piercings, and even the design of a car. When it came to fashion and cars, there was never a mutual ground. These days, cars itself have to be bought in a stylish color, have rims which is compatible with the color and whether the roof should be of a different color or not, to the inside of the car and what shade the seats and dashboard have to be, to the intricate stitching on the car seating to ensure the colors are fitting and well-matched. Because the person knows the vehicle is his chariot, and will be viewed by friends, co-workers, and acquaintances. The car he chooses to buy has to be to his level of classiness, and the design and fashionable form of that will be his testimony. Even Coco Chanel had said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, with the way we live, what is happening”.
Fashion shows the world what we are capable of, the level of sophistication and refinement we have the capacity of, the ability to be a trendsetter, to be able to be chic and cute, upscale and classy, or elegant and classic. When we prepare for a night out, it is literally us analyzing our outfits from head to foot, the accessories we are going to doll up in, the way we want our make up done, and the hair style we want for the night. The clothes we wear have to compliment how we want to be perceived as, from the chic look to the elegant one. Our bag has to match our shoes perfectly, with accessories to flatter them and all has to acclaim the outfit we choose. The make up we wear is the choice of going for the bronzy, shimmery look with light eye shadow and peachy colored lip sticks, or the heavy eye make up with the creamy foundation and the bright red lipstick. Our hair goes from either the wet, just got out of the shower, curled and scrunched up look, to the iron curls, or maybe the flat straightened to simply blow dried hair or a fancy hairdo. All these things come into account, and all these things come under the fashion territory. The thorough ensemble for the night shows what and how we are representing ourselves. Whether it be dancing around, socializing, and sipping on drinks, to sitting in your comfort zone with a few close friends. It is the entire attire that shows who you are for the night. And it is the exact same thing for the outfit we wear during the day.
Whether unconsciously or not, fashion products have taken over our dressing tables, bathroom counters, and shower stands. The tiniest things such as face washes, moisturizers, shampoos, scrubs, face masks, it is all the ones that come highly recommended by department stores or what magazines say are the best to use. Beauty products are constantly sold, people wanting to believe it would make them look as good as the models they see on the advertisement. Advertisement companies and fashion have aided each other to become such an ideal match. People are constantly looking for items that would make them look as good as what is advertised through models and pictures.
Fashion is also one of the most popular subjects on the Internet. Online shopping has become just a few clicks, a credit card and address, and it is delivered to your doorstep in a manner of days. From the biggest stores to the smallest, online shopping is present. It has even become the most famous topics for blogs and social media applications alike. Instagram has millions of followers for fashionable, stylish pictures of outfits, which is posted on a daily basis. The consistency of fashion never fades or can ever be held back. Many have looked to Instagram or Facebook to create their own online shopping pages, where people can contact the owner through email and telling them which of their outfits they wish to purchase and have delivered to them. An example being @carnivaldxbofficial, a business, where they constantly post pictures of beautiful outfits worn by everyday girls while out and about. They ship worldwide and have details present in order to contact them for sizes, different colors available, and to purchase these outfits.
Monarchs and Celebrities have quickly also become fashion icons, where what they have worn has been analyzed from head to foot and bought or given from which stores or designers. Celebrities in specific take on a part time job as mannequins for fashion.Their jobs are not only to wear the designers to tell others who they are wearing. This leads to the question in all the oscars which is “Who are you wearing?”
In regards to monarchs in today’s day and age, just like celebrities, they play a similar role in fashion. An example being Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, where she is constantly photographed whether it is for grocery shopping or for an elegant event, her clothing observed day and night. Another monarch highly involved in the fashion world is from the Grimaldi family of Monaco, Princess Charlotte, who has been on the cover of Vogue magazine, been photographed sitting on the front row of fashion shows, and is often mentioned in the best dressed list in many valuable and influential magazines. Virginia Woolf put it together perfectly, “Vain trifles as they seem, clothes have, they say, more important offices than to merely keep us warm. They change our view of the world and the world’s view of us”.
The latest styles were once limited to the hierarchy, are now available for everyone to purchase. The affordable prices or little dip into a savings account, and people from any social class now must have the latest designs whether from designer or department stores. Gianni Versace said, “Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but decide who you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live.” Fashion is the expression we tend to utilize in every manner, whether that is through our outfits, houses, offices, or cars. We own fashion just as much as fashion owns us. We consume it, just as much as we are consumed by it. Fashion has history and the prevailing taste, it has art and a shaping and sculpting like no other. Fashion is a symbolization depicted to the world in a demeanor
